The owner of a popular campground where hundreds of people had been gathering in June, including hundreds from Northern Ireland, said he was shocked at the news that about half the site had been destroyed.


A village of 1,000 people is expected to have to be moved, as tens of thousands of families and friends flock to its remote beauty spot in the rugged, mountainous area of the North Downs.

The owner of Algarve's popular campground, John MacGilligan, said it was a sad situation and he hoped his family's old home would still be there.

As the residents in Algarve, near Tully, await their home to be returned, they are urging the local community to 'leave' Algarve and return it to the people.

Mr MacGilligan's community has been largely overlooked by the area, with most people still living with their families in the nearby area of Pembrokeshire and other remote areas of Scotland.
