LAWRENCE LOVED TO PLAY MARINE FOOTBALL. The last time he took his foot off the pedal, though, was when he was in high school. It's hard to put your mind around what was so captivating about the sport that made him choose football. What was so captivating about playing a sport that can be done without even a foot on the floor?

When he was younger, he had a fascination with sports on wheels. "I would sit around a campfire and play football," he says. "And when my dad showed me a football, I would take it away and go out and practice."

His football practice, though, was on the field and not in a game. So for about seven years, the 18-year-old boy lived on the sidelines.

One day, he found himself in a class in Vancouver and was given the chance to try out for the team he's now coaching. He did so well that he was accepted for the senior team.

He wasn't playing against kids who weren't even out of their teens, but the competition was fierce. "It was all-in."

Now as a 25-year-old with four kids, Mr. Lovato has found a sport that's just as physically demanding as football. And he's happy about that, even though he doesn't always get the chance to see the game.

Marine ball isn't about going out and beating the best players in the world, or getting in shape for the first time. It's also a sport that's a lot easier to do if you've already got the skill set to do so.

"With my foot on the ground and a team in front of me, I get better every single day," he says.

While it's no surprise he is a proponent of marine sport, there's one part of Mr. Lovato's game that he's not sure about and that's his role on the field.

What he wants more people to understand is that football is different than other sports because, after all, football is something you practice while you're off-road and driving.
